สำหรับวันเสาร์นี้เราลองเปลี่ยนมาทำโจทย์ TOEIC Part 7: Reading Comprehension หรือ “การทำความเข้าใจจากการอ่าน” กันครับ อาจารย์ได้คัด 1 บทความ พร้อมโจทย์ที่เกี่ยวข้อง 1 ข้อครับ สำหรับข้อนี้ หากทำได้ ผมเชื่อว่า ท่านสามารถทำข้อสอบ TOEIC ได้ 700 PLUS+ อย่างแน่นอนครับ

เนื่องจากเป็นโจทย์ reading comprehension เราจึงจำเป็นต้องอ่านบทความที่แนบมาด้วย ดังนี้ครับ:
Operation of Detroit’s trash incinerator, the largest in the nation, was halted last month, less than a year after it was put into service. The huge plant, which was designed to change waste into energy, had been hailed as an innovative means of putting trash to good use. However, soon after the plant began operating, unhealthy levels of mercury began to be detected in the air around the city. It was soon discovered that the culprit was the new incinerator. Entire neighborhoods were threatened by the toxins being discharged into the air. Environmental officials ordered the plant to be shut down last week. They say it is uncertain when, or even whether, the plant will reopen.

– hail -> ยกย่อง
– means -> วิธี (สำหรับความหมายนี้ ต้องลงท้ายด้วย s เสมอ ไม่ว่าจะเป็นเอกพจน์หรือพหูพจน์ก็ตาม)
– culprit -> ตัวการ / ผู้กระทำผิด
– neighborhood -> บริเวณใกล้เคียง
– threaten -> คุกคาม
– discharge -> ปล่อยออก
ในเมื่อโจทย์ถามว่า “ทำไมโรงงานไฟฟ้าถึงถูกปิดตัวลง” เราต้องลองหาจากตัวบทความก่อนว่า ตรงไหนที่กล่าวถึงผลที่เกิดขึ้น (การถูกปิดตัวลง) ครับ สำหรับบทความนี้ ประโยคที่พูดถึงประเด็นดังกล่าวก็คือ Environmental officials ordered the plant to be shut down last week. ครับ จากนั้น ลองมองย้อนกลับไป เพื่อหาสาเหตุของผลที่เกิดขึ้นนี้ เราก็จะพบว่ามันคือ However, soon after the plant began operating, unhealthy levels of mercury began to be detected in the air around the city. It was soon discovered that the culprit was the new incinerator. เห็นไหมครับ เพราะเตาเผาขยะปล่อยปรอทออกมาในระดับที่ไม่ดีต่อสุขภาพ ผลก็คือ เจ้าหน้าที่สั่งปิดโรงงานไฟฟ้าแห่งนี้ครับ
สำหรับตัวเลือกอื่น (A) There was too much trash. และ (C) It was unable to convert waste into energy. ไม่ได้ถูกกล่าวถึงในบทความครับ ส่วน (D) It could not be regulated. ลองคิดดูนะครับ ในเมื่อ Environmental officials ordered the plant to be shut down last week. (เจ้าหน้าที่ด้านสิ่งแวดล้อมได้สั่งให้โรงงานไฟฟ้าดังกล่าวปิดตัวลงเมื่อสัปดาห์ที่ผ่านมา) ได้แล้ว แสดงว่าก็ต้องมีการ regulate หรือ “ควบคุมดูแล” เป็นอย่างแน่นอนครับ
